Born to a father who is a dentist and a mother who is a physician, Damian Olsen ’08 was probably destined to have “Dr.” in front of his name.

Besides being exposed from a young age to the medical professionals in his family, Damian was interested in science and biology and loved working with people.

“I always had that aspiration to go to medical school,” he says.

It wasn’t until he had completed a master’s degree in clinical anatomy and was in his third year of medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, however, that he considered specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.

“I did a rotation in it and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. … I was kind of feeling called to it. I knew it would be demanding and was also at the forefront of the Catholic moral dilemmas that come up in health care,” he says.

In his Women’s Wellness and Fertility practice in Manchester, New Hampshire, Damian does not prescribe birth control and offers only medical treatment and surgeries in conformity with the Catholic faith.

After a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, he did a fellowship in medical/surgical NaPro (Natural Procreative) Technology at the Paul VI Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction in Omaha. NaPro Technology was developed by Dr. Thomas Hilgers to monitor a woman’s reproductive and gynecological health and was inspired by St. Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae.

Working with a midwife and nurse practitioner, Olsen maintains a busy obstetrics practice, but his main focus is the surgical treatment of endometriosis and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Both can cause infertility but can be addressed without using the reproductive endocrinology of the IVF (in vitro fertilization) method, which conflicts with Church teaching.

Damian says he constantly sees patients who feel that the type of care provided through NaPro Technology is more thorough and gets to the root of actual issues.

“It’s fulfilling because people are sometimes at the end of the road, and they get to us and feel like we can really help them, which is really gratifying and a blessing to do.”

Dr. Damian Olsen received the 2024 Father Dan Egan Alumni Award in recognition of his fidelity to Church teaching and commitment to excellence in his medical profession.
